چکیده

The preference of red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta, for microencapsulated (MC) pyriproxifen based corn grit baits (P-bait) was conducted in laboratory and field conditions. A positive correlation between the microencapsulation rate and water tolerance ability of P-bait was observed. A 20% increment of water tolerance ability of P-baits was observed when P-baits were microencapsulated with 5% poly-ε-caprolactone. The microencapsulated and wet P-baits were less preferred than normal P-baits by the fire ants either in laboratory or field conditions. Based upon these results, poly-ε-caprolactone coated fire ant baits cannot be considered as perfect fire ant baits.

Phorid flies, Pseudacteon spp. (Diptera: Phoridae), affect forager size ratios of red imported fire ants Solenopsis invicta (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Texas.

Multiple species of Pseudacteon phorid flies (Diptera: Phoridae) are currently being released throughout the southern United States to aid biological control of red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). It is anticipated that these flies will interfere with S. invicta foraging, allowing native ant assemblages to outcompete S. invicta for available resources. N...

Red Imported Fire Ants (hymenoptera: Formicidae) at Gopher Tortoise (testudines: Testudinidae) Burrows

The gopher tortoise, Gopherus polyphemus Daudin, is endemic to the southeastern US, where its populations are declining primarily due to habitat destruction. Tortoises are preyed upon by many species, including the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, a destructive exotic species now common throughout the tortoises’ entire range. We surveyed ants using tuna bait at 154 G. polyphemus...

Host Specificity in Two Additional Pseudacteon Spp. (diptera: Phoridae), Parasitoids of Solenopsis Fire Ants (hymenoptera: Formicidae)

We tested the host specificity of two South American Pseudacteon phorid flies, P. obtusus Borgmeier and P. borgmeieri Schmitz, on North American colonies of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, and the tropical fire ant, S. geminata (F.). Sequential host specificity tests conducted in the laboratory indicated that P. obtusus was highly specific to S. invicta . In individual tria...

Discovering Pheromones of the Red Imported Fire Ant (Solenopsis invicta Buren): A Review and Proposed New Target for Pheromone Disruption1

A method is described for discovering pheromones of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), using affinity chromatography with the pheromone-binding proteins of the ant. Proteins in the pheromoneand odorant-binding protein family, which are abundant in moths and other insect species, are not apparent in fire ant antennae. Two other types of hydrophobic lig...
